As part of its corporate social responsibility, Western Union Ghana, and its agents, has donated 600 school desks and chairs to six underprivileged schools, in support of education in the country. Each of the schools received 100 pieces of chairs and desks.
The six underprivileged schools that benefited from the donation include, Baba Yara 1 and 2 School and Otirbu D/A Primary in Greater Accra, Wiamoase Dinn Primary and Korase M/A Primary in the Ashanti Region, Abeyie L/A Primary in the Central Region and Aboadze D/A Primary in the Western Region.
The donation took place at the Baba Yara 1 and 2 School at Madina a suburb of Accra.
The Head of Western Union, Anthony Kemavor, observed that the government cannot be expected to provide the vast array of educational needs in the country, and as such the private sector should rise to the challenge, and play its part in supporting the education system in the country.
Mr. Kemavor further noted that the selection of the schools that benefited from the donation was based on their immediate needs.
According to him, the donation was aimed at extending the company’s brand and make affirmative responds to the pressing question posed by some underprivileged schools, “Can we make our school a more conducive learning environment?”
He said that the company’s foundation seeks to support initiatives, not just here in Ghana, but across Africa and the world beyond.
“The Back to School promotion has ran six consecutive years, and seen numerous school-going children benefit from the provision of school equipment and cash scholarships,” Mr. Kemavor added.
Western Union has so far invested over US$3.5 in disaster relief, and development projects across 30 African countries, since the inception of the Back to School promotion programme.
