The Wenchi Divisional Command of the Ghana Police Service has arrested fourteen people, who allegedly fired gunshots at Nchiraa in the Wenchi Municipality, during a chieftaincy problem.
Five of the suspects were arrested on Friday November 14, after two factions clashed during the purported installation of a new chief for Nchiraa, after the death of the late chief, Nana Tabiri Kwaku Ababio, two months ago.
The clash, which began at dawn last Friday, hindered the ongoing Polio immunization process, and other activities within the area.
There was no fatality as at the evening of that Friday, save one lady who reported an injury caused by a stray bullet to the police station at Nchiraa.
The first five people arrested on Friday, were arraigned before the Wenchi Magistrate Court, presided over by Mr. S. E. Walker, who remanded the suspects to reappear before it on November 21 this year.
The remaining suspects, who were arrested over the weekend, would be arraigned before the same court on November 17.
When contacted the Divisional Police Commander for Wenchi, Superintendent Kwame Nkrumah Akomeah, stated that he was surprised to hear of the installation, which resulted to in the gunshots, because he had advised the people to hold on with the installation process.
According to Superintendent Akomeah, the police received a letter signed by Nana Amponsah Munukum, Queen of Nchiraa, informing the police about the anxiety surrounding the installation, and he accordingly ordered for its suspension.
He disclosed that he had dispatched his men to maintain peace and order, while investigations were being conducted into the incident.
